چکیده

Within the EU Framework V project VICTEC we develop a running model of empathy that is based on both empirical results and a state-of-the-art general psychological theory and can be implemented in virtual agents. Empathy focuses on the ability of one person (the so called “observer”) to perceive, to identify and to deal with the emotions of a social partner (whether virtual or human agent; “target”). Most contemporary empathy researchers (e.g. [1] [4]) agree that two aspects concerning the result of an empathic process have to be distinguished: the cognitive and the affective aspect. Thus, one speaks of cognitive empathy when the outcome of an empathic process is that the observer knows what the target feels. Affective empathy is spoken of when the observer feels something due to the perception of the target. The aim of the work was to create a running model that allows reproducing those empathic processes with the help of general psychological architecture, the PSI model [2] [3]. One of the key aspects of the PSI model is a theory on emotion which defines emotions as parameters of cognitive processes like resolution or flexibility. To evaluate the behaviour of the running model two basic approaches were pursued. The first approach focuses on the system’s behaviour which should be stable and plausible. Therefore, an analysis of the behaviour of the key variables (cognitive and affective empathy, need for affiliation and certainty, observer’s care and observer’s external behaviour) under certain conditions (systemic variation of input variables like similarity of observer and target) was conducted. This analysis revealed stable behaviour. Plausibility of the system was rated by psychology professionals. After explaining the model to the experts, it was their task to state all implausible variables and relations that they were able to recognize. No major implausible constituents of the system were detected by the expert evaluators. The main part of the evaluation focuses on the verification of the system by comparing the system’s behaviour to empirical results. Encouraging results were received from this type of evaluation.

An empathic virtual dialog agent to improve human-machine interaction

Recent research has shown that virtual agents expressing empathic emotions toward users have the potentiality to enhance human-machine interaction. To identify under which circumstances a virtual agent should express empathic emotions, we have analyzed real human-machine dialog situations that have led users to express emotion. The results of this empirical study have been combined with theoret...

A Process Model of Empathy For Virtual Agents

For more than a century, empathy has been a central topic in the study of human emotion. It plays a crucial role in our everyday social life, having implications for the survival of the species. In the case of agents that inhabit virtual worlds and interact socially among each other and with humans, empathy has also been considered to be an important mechanism to promote engaging and believable...

Look on the Bright Side: A Model of Cognitive Change in Virtual Agents

The modelling of empathic reactions in virtual agents has been recognised as a key aspect to improve agent-user relationship. Empathy is particularly important in a virtual agent used in computer-based psychotherapy applications. From a clinical perspective, it is more useful to produce therapeutic-empathy responses in the agent and not only natural empathic reactions as response to patient’s i...

Fighting Bullying with the Help of Autonomous Agents in a Virtual School Environment

Using empathic virtual agents for Personal and Social Education is a powerful and immersive way to sensitise students for the problems and dangers related to persistent aggressive behaviour among students, also known as bullying. The work reported here relates to the evaluation of applying such agents in schools in the UK, Portugal, and Germany as well as to consequences that can be drawn from ...

Empathic interaction with synthetic characters: the importance of similarity

Empathic interaction with synthetic characters enables users to build and maintain an emotional involvement that can result in stimulating novel interactions. Many factors impact on empathic interaction; here we focus on the role of ‘similarity’ in developing empathic relations. Evidence suggests that if a character is perceived as being similar to the user in appearance and behaviour, then gre...
